An Evening with Dan Bern

Bern's father was a concert pianist who emigrated from Lithuania to Palestine in 1939, a Jew who was one step ahead of the Nazis. Later he met and married Bern's mother, a German Jew, a singer and poet who had also escaped the ravages of World War II. In the late 1950s they emigrated again and settled in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, where Bern was reared, the cello-playing, baseball-loving progeny of two Old World artists in the American heartland. In time Bern found the guitar, and his way to the West Coast, whre he got his footing in the neo-folk music scene in Los Angeles in the early 1990s. He put out his first album in 1997. Breathe is his seventh. In between, he's amassed a strong underground following, built in part on his prodigious output of intellectual and topical songs. He's frequently been compared to Bob Dylan, because like the young Dylan, he's funny and smart and has a regally Semitic nose.

Jeremy Enigk (of Sunny Day Real Estate) + Damien Jurado

Jeremy Enigk first emerged as the frontman of the highly touted Seattle band Sunny Day Real Estate, which issued their Sub Pop debut, Diary, in 1994. In the midst of recording the group's sophomore effort, Enigk underwent a radical spiritual transformation and left the group; although he later returned to complete LP2, Sunny Day Real Estate nonetheless dissolved, leaving bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith to join Dave Grohl in the Foo Fighters. Initially, Enigk retired from the music industry, but he soon picked up his guitar and began writing new songs, and his solo debut, The Return of the Frog Queen, a collection bypassing the primal furor of Sunny Day Real Estate's emocore for a lush, orchestral pop sound, appeared in 1996. His days as a lead singer were not over, however, and the next year the band, minus Mendel, reunited and released How It Feel to Be Something On in 1998, followed by The Rising Tide in 2000. Unfortunately, due to label problems, the record, which would turn out to be the group's last, was never promoted well, and in June 2001 Sunny Day Real Estate officially split up. Just a few months later, however, Enigk came back together with Goldsmith and Mendel to form the Fire Theft, which issued a self-titled album in 2003. Finally, ten years after The Return of the Frog Queen had hit shelves, Enigk released his second solo record, World Waits, this time taking a much more mainstream rock approach to his songs. In August 2007, less than 12 months since his last full-length came out, Enigk issued a short album (with four new tracks and five live in-studio performances of songs off World Waits), Missing Link. Jason Ankeny & Marisa Brown, All Music Guide

Urban folk singer/songwriter Damien Jurado quietly built up one of the strongest catalogs on the indie scene, earning high critical praise yet somehow never quite getting his proper due. Nick Drake had a definite impact on much of his work, but Jurado modeled his career on more idiosyncratic, unpredictable figures like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, or Randy Newman -- songwriters who followed their own muse wherever it took them, whether fans and critics agreed or not. His independent-mindedness was born at least in part from the influence of punk, and one of the results was a concern for emotional authenticity that led him to delve into other people's lives instead of his own. Many of Jurado's best songs spun concise, literate tales of quiet everyday despair, which often earned him comparisons to short story writer Raymond Carver. But his storytelling bent -- not to mention his ambivalence toward confessional material -- arose from a stronger grounding in traditional folk than spiritual compatriots like Elliott Smith or Cat Power. And with detours into pop, roots rock, full-fledged electric indie rock, and even found-sound experiments, Jurado ensured that his body of work was impossible to completely pin down. - All Music Guide

Loudmouth Promotions presents Dreaming of Eden + The Common Threat + Celebrity Gunfight

Dreaming of Eden is a melodic hard rock band based out of Northern Virginia. The group provides listeners with innovative, passionate songs that far exceed the boundaries of todays traditional hard rock stereotypes. They bring their stellar sound and jaw-dropping live show with a take-no-prisoners approach to achieving success and national exposure. Stemming from roots in the hardcore and emo scenes, Dreaming of Eden brings a fresh take to hard music. Driving riffs and distinct back beats layered with powerful vocal and lyrical content are what set Dreaming of Eden apart. In a world of screamers the trio presents a new side to hard rock with noteworthy melodies while offering a high amount of energy that is difficult to rival.

The Common Threat is a four-piece band from the Washington DC area. Their eclectic style stems from a variety of influences including Saul Williams, Rage Against The Machine, Chevelle and the Gym Class Heroes. Their mix of hip-hop, rock and punk is inspired by a political agenda, which is captured through the aggressive nature of their music and propelled further by vocalist Mark Longhelt. The innovative Lenny Pinnix brings a combination of hard-hitting riffs and intricate melodies. Bassist Greg Shoenig’s funk style along with drummer Nate Hoffman’s precision pushes the dangerously infectious drive at the core of the band’s sound. With their range of talent and hard work, The Common Threat has come to be a major player in the DC metro area music scene. They play weekly shows and are currently planning for a summer tour that will stretch the East Coast. They are also planning the release of their full length album in Fall 2008.

Christopher Williams "Sweet Redemption" CD Release Show

+ Chuck E Costa

Singer-songwriter Christopher Williams has always named his cars, and he speaks of them with the personal familiarity of old friends. His 1995 Accord, which he affectionately calls “Grace,” was stolen recently. This is never a good thing. It is especially bad, however, for a musician who depends upon travel for his livelihood; and even worse for someone two days away from relocating 1100 miles across the country. As with all things lost though, it is usually the search itself that gives us meaning. And if you’ve ever heard a song or seen a show by Williams, you may understand that the seeking is only as hard as we make it; the journey is only as meaningful as we let it be; and that Williams’ storied search for Grace is, in fact, something upon which he has built his musical career.

Chuck Prophet (full band!)

+ Mark Mallman

Soap and Water is the latest album from Chuck Prophet. It's a burst of unrestrained creativity from a man who enjoys confounding people's expectations. "When I get some kind of inspirational virus, I follow it through to its conclusion. The virus starts with two or three songs that take me someplace I haven't been. It's like writing a play; the songs are characters, inhabited by their own needs or whatever. This time there's probably more devil-may-care spirit to it. It's more spontaneous, less introspective. I sang a lot of it live and the musicians played it on the floor, live."

The twelve tunes on Soap and Water run the gamut from lavishly arranged tunes featuring a string section and Nashville's Methodist Church Children's Choir to minimal late night meditations caught on the fly in one take.

Sunday June 15 progressive/experimental $20 - 7:30pm

Peter Hammill (of Van der Graaf Generator)

Peter Hammill was born in London in 1948. His career began as the singer and songwriter for Van der Graaf Generator, the chaotic, scary and highly influential underground group of the Seventies. The adventurous attitude which they brought to their music remains a feature of Peter's work to this day.

By the time the group folded in 1978 Peter had already recorded seven solo albums, covering numerous lyrical and musical bases in the process. If one did not know otherwise the proto-punk of "Nadir's Big Chance", the full-blown emotion of "Over" and the scatter-gun arrangements of "The Silent Corner" could well have been the work of three entirely different artists.

Peter's work has always been independent and uncompromising and it is perhaps because of this that he has been cited as a major influence by so many other artists. In their respective contexts he is as happy working with pure sonics as he is with fully orchestral songs, with three-chord electric guitar "tricks" as with piano ballads.

Don Dixon and The Jump Rabbits + Parthenon Huxley

Don Dixon has devoted his entire life to the popular song. Whether working as a singer, songwriter, musician or producer, he has always tried to capture the essence of his life in the moment.

He began playing and recording in his mid-teens, co-founding ARROGANCE, a band that helped forge the North Carolina scene which brought the world Let's Active and The dBs, along with dozens of other bands that followed in their wake. Dixon went solo in 1983 and has released nine cds. He is currently at work on a new recording with his long-time touring band, Jamie Hoover and Jim Brock. After twenty years, Jamie has named the group "Don Dixon & the Jump Rabbits". The new platter is called "The Nu-Look" and is due in May 2008.

Parthenon Huxley, aka P. Hux, has been dubbed a "pop visionary", "rock's most underrated pop genius", a songwriting "master" as well as the guy with the "monumental name." Hux Live In Your Living Room; P. Hux Purgatory Falls; P. Hux in Your Parlour; Homemade Spaceship The Music of ELO Performed by P. Hux"; P. Hux Mile High Fan; and the just released P. Will Anderson, Kit French, Johnny Stubblefield, Alex Hargrave and Nate McFarland are SPARKY’S FLAW - think Maroon 5 and The Fray. Unknown Hinson + Fools and Horses

Who is UNKNOWN HINSON? He's a sociopathic, gun-totin', ex-con redneck (charges include three counts of murder one, 19 paternity suits and random grave-robbing offenses) who's purported to be a 400-year-old vampire. He's a former carnival geek whose midway specialties were biting the heads off "certain barnyard fowls" and lifting 50-pound weights with his tongue. He boasts many grand titles, not the least of which are "Chart-Toppin' King of Country & Western Troubadours Ordained" and, most importantly (to him), "God's Gift to the Womens." Oh, and one more thing: Unknown Hinson has previously gone on record as swearing that Hank Williams, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles downright stole most of their hits from him. "Them boys owe me hundreds!"

Thad Cockrell

A Note from Matt about the show and his tour:

“I'm excited to announce the 'Where We Started' tour!!! I'm doing the tour as an acoustic duo with my friend Justin Rosolino. The idea behind it is to throw things back a couple years to when we were playing smaller rooms with fewer people on stage. Needless to say I'm SO EXCITED about this. I love the interaction that takes place in these rooms and I can't wait to see y’all out! Spread the word because the rooms are smaller and there are fewer tickets available in each place, so you'll want to get on it quick!

Thanks for everything, y’ all - can't wait to see ya out!”

Now at the ripe age of 17, Adam has been mentored by Daniel Brindley and Mary Ann Redmond, and has a rich repertoire of original songs. He released his first EP in November 2006. Paul Thorn

Inveterate storyteller Paul Thorn credits his gift of gab to being the son of a Pentecostal preacher. "You get to know how to get along with almost everybody. You just have to sit down and start getting to know one another." Thorn has a lot about himself to tell. One would expect to hear great stories from a guy who boxed Roberto "Hands of Stone" Duran on national television, made chairs for a living, skydives for fun, had his first singing gig at age three, and who happens to be one of the South's finest songwriters. Paul Thorn doesn't disappoint.
