Will Hoge

+ Old Springs Pike

Decades ago, before the first rock and roll idols turned music into a product, musicians played music the way cobblers mended shoes and carpenters built homes. It was a trade like any other job and men did it for work, for wage. Young men would pack their station wagons with gear and travel from city to city to play their songs. For these musicians, it was not only all they wanted to do but all they could do. They were not in search of fame or fortune. It was simply a life in music. Welcome to the world of Will Hoge.

Shane Hines

+ Your Vegas + Better Days Trio

Sometimes the songs that hit us best are the ones that we don't even realize we are listening to. It is strange how that can happen. Stumbling into an unknown venue, pacing through our nightly rituals, driving in our car. A voice is heard that seems to be sharing time with us rather than demanding our attention. While there is no secret to how we hear these songs, there does seem to be a new friend in the playlist and his name is Shane Hines.

Grabbing the attention of MTV, Shane's song "My Hope Is" closed the final episode of The Real World Key West by softly suggesting the words "I think I'm feeling fine / I'm better / Alive". While it may seem easy to adopt the idea that there is another way out, Shane has crafted albums of songs suggesting just the opposite.

This electrifying group takes their name from the mystery sauce popular at Chinese/Soul Food carry - outs throughout D.C. Comprised of seven of D.C. and Go - Go musics most prominent musicians, the band has created a new form of music called "Pocket" that effectively blends D.C. Go - Go percussion with well crafted songs, explosive raps and sultry melodies. Mambo Sauce and their label Red C Records intend to use this formula to infiltrate the national music market with the D.C Go - Go sound.

A Change of Pace + Houston Calls + You me and Everyone We Know

Houston Calls: A rock n roll superpower designed to conquer the US one small town at a time beginning with Sullivan, Illinois and ending with Allendale, NJ. We combine elements of earth (Okie), fire (Josh), wind (Jarrett), water (Chitty), and heart (Jose) to make for a very interesting sound. We love playing music and nothing can change that. xoxo

An Evening with The Greencards

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT VIRIDIAN....... “There's not a bad track on this superb collection. The Greencards can, without serious competition, make a reasonable claim to be the best country music outfit ever to emerge from Australia. Great musicians, great songs, great singing.” –Bruce Elder Sydney Morning Herald (Australia) 4 STARS

"The Greencards are a little island of Truth and Beauty in a sea of artifice and mediocrity. What a fine group, and what a great collection of songs." – Rosanne Cash

"These guys have made a stunning record, I was blown away." – Buddy Miller

Friday August 22 reggae/dub/funk $10 - 10pm late show

See-I + Mojai

Mojai was born out of the deepest, darkest regions of P-funk's bootyhole and was raised on the Headhunters' hearty funk stew, all while huffing the stanky fumes of Albert Ayler's sonic assault. They matured through Sly Stone's freaky teachings and came of age under the influence of Prince's pussy control. Now, fully formed, Mojai travels the world seeking to destroy those that would bring squareness into the land by laying down only the dirtiest brown round grooves through weapons of mass dis-funk-tion.

SEE-I is an 8-piece roots reggae band from Washington, DC. While SEE-I is a solid reggae band, there are many other influences that can be heard in the music ranging from blues to rock, latin, soul, funk and brazilian beats. This makes sense because of the variety of bands that the SEE-I band members hail from. 4 of the 8 members are part of Thievery Corporation and other bands represented include All Mighty Senators, Fort Knox Five, Sin Miedo, Thunderball, Nayas, International Velvet, Soul Brazil and others. All of these experiences and influences combine on stage to create a unique sound that can best be described as a reggae jam band. SEE-I delivers a positive vibe that keeps the dancefloor packed and grooving all night with smiles on everyone's faces.

Saturday August 23 rock $10 - 10pm late show

Politicks + Square Trio

Friday September 5 rock/country/rockabilly $20 - 8pm show

An Evening with Bill Kirchen and Too Much Fun

Bill Kirchen plays American roots music. He received a Grammy nomination for Best Country Instrumental Performance 2001. A Titan of the Telecaster guitar (Guitar Player magazine May 1998 & June 2002), he celebrates an American musical tradition where country music draws upon its origins in blues and bluegrass, and in the Western swing of Texas and California honky tonks. Bill Kirchen first gained renown as lead guitarist and a vocalist for Commander Cody & his Lost Planet Airmen, the renegade country-rock band that tuned a whole generation of rock fans into the joys of unvarnished country, boogie and rockabilly. It was the resonant twang of Kirchen's battered Telecaster that drove "Hot Rod Lincoln" into the Top Ten in 1972. Kirchen has played guitar on recordings and performances with Gene Vincent, Link Wray, Danny Gatton, Emmylou Harris, Hoyt Axton, Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello.

Saturday September 13 acoustic/roots $20 - 7pm early show

Steve Forbert

Nearly 28 years since breaking into pop consciousness with his second album Jackrabbit Slim and its infectious Top Ten single “Romeo’s Tune,” Steve Forbert remains a master of songs offering clear-eyed insight and plain-spoken, heartfelt eloquence. On his 429 Records/SLG debut, the well-traveled Nashville-based troubadour—who maintains a busy touring schedule of over 100 dates a year — explores his ongoing fascination for Strange Names & New Sensations with characteristic wit, a sense of social consciousness and the ever-present romantic optimism that has endeared him to two generations of folk/rock fans.

Beyond launching an exciting relationship with a new label, the vibrant collection finds Forbert in the midst of a true career renaissance at the wonderful age of 52—a time in his life he reflects upon wistfully on the sly narrative of the uptempo, horn driven tune “Middle Age.”

This is his eleventh release of the decade, a roll that began with Evergreen Boy in 2000 and included four live recordings in addition to a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Folk Album for Any Old Time: Songs Of Jimmy Rodgers--a tribute to “America’s Blue Yodeler” who was the first country music superstar (and a native of Forbert’s hometown, Meridian, Mississippi). In 2003, Geffen released Rock While I Can Rock: The Geffen Years, which featured material from two albums Forbert released on the label, 1988’s Streets Of This Town and 1992’s The American In Me. In October of 2006, Forbert was inducted into the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame.

Friday September 19 country/roots $12 - 7:30pm early show

Caroline Herring

PRAISE FOR CAROLINE'S NEW CD, LANTANA
**********
PASTE: “Paper Gown…has to be the best example of a songwriter getting inside the head of an unsympathetic real-life protagonist since Steve Earle's "John Walker's Blues."…Herring effortlessly plumbs the emotional depths of her songs with her evocative alto. Her delivery, along with Rich Brotherton's pitch-perfect production, makes this song cycle resonant in more ways than a simple, rootsy singer/songwriter album ought to.

**********
NO DEPRESSION: “Insightful, evocative writing is the common denominator of Lantana, a compelling acoustic album rooted in the complexities of women’s lives, especially women of the South.”

Saturday September 27 Scottish/folk/roots $20 - 7pm early show

Julie Fowlis

Mark Radcliffe hailed her voice and songs as “enchanting, beguiling and as fascinating as songs by Kate Bush and Björk” and KT Tunstall described her voice as "formidable and amazingly rhythmic". The elfin figure they are describing is Julie Fowlis, a talented singer and instrumentalist from Scotland. She is the BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year 2008 and in a few short years has taken the music scene by storm, gathering a small army of fans around the world including an impressive list of celebrities including the afore mentioned Mark Radcliffe, KT Tunstall plus Ricky Gervais and Phil Selway from Radiohead. In 2007 she was invited to appear on "Later...with Jools Holland" and was a special guest on the critically acclaimed "Transatlantic Sessions" series and has entertained millions of radio listeners around the world with her engaging live sessions and live performances. However she is somewhat of an enigma as she sings in a language only understood by around 60,000 people - which accounts for only approximately 1% of the population of Scotland.

She sings in Scottish Gaelic and spends her time touring around the world bringing ancient songs from the Hebridean Islands to new audiences. She is an accomplished musician as well - playing Highland bagpipes, whistles, oboe & cor anglais and three waltzes on the one row melodeon. Recently Julie has delved a little into broadcasting, and has had the opportunity to present two flagship music programmes on BBC Scotland - the traditional music programme "Travelling Folk" and the world music show "Global Gathering". A one hour documentary on Julie and her musical travels, entitled "Bliadhna Julie/Julie’s Year" was also broadcast by the BBC in 2007. She was publicly voted Gaelic Singer of the Year 2007 at the Scots Trad Music Awards and her album "cuilidh", produced with husband Eamon Doorley, was voted "Album of the Year" at the same awards. She has a clutch of other awards, including BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award 2006 for Best Emerging Artist (the first ever Gaelic Artist to be nominated for such an award) and was also voted Gaelic Singer of the Year 2005 at the Scots Trad Music Awards. She remains the only singer to have won this prestigious award twice. She is very chuffed about this and her Mam and Dad have the awards up in the living room. For more info or to buy Julie’s acclaimed debut solo album, see her website www.juliefowlis.com
